GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It came into effect on 1st July 2017, replacing a complex structure of multiple indirect taxes previously levied by the central and state governments, such as VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and more.

GST is a destination-based tax, meaning the tax revenue goes to the state where the goods or services are consumed, not where they are produced.

Key Components of GST

  • CGST – Central GST, collected by the Central Government.

  • SGST – State GST, collected by State Governments for intra-state transactions.

  • IGST – Integrated GST, collected by the Central Government for inter-state transactions and imports.

Simplified Tax Structure

  • GST unified various indirect taxes into a single tax, making the tax system more transparent, efficient, and easier to comply with for businesses.

Elimination of Cascading Effect

  • Previously, taxes were levied on top of other taxes ("tax on tax"). GST allows businesses to claim input tax credit, which avoids the cascading effect and reduces the overall tax burden.

Boost to the Economy

  • A unified tax regime has helped reduce barriers to trade, encourage formalization of businesses, and promote a common national market, which in turn boosts economic growth.

Enhanced Compliance Through Technology

  • GST relies heavily on technology for registration, filing, payment, and refunds via the GSTN portal, increasing compliance and reducing manual errors.

Increased Tax Revenue

  • With improved tracking of transactions and invoice matching, GST has widened the tax base and curbed tax evasion, leading to improved revenue collection.

Support for Ease of Doing Business

  • The uniformity and standardization brought by GST has made India a more attractive place for businesses and investors, thereby enhancing the Ease of Doing Business.
